Appalshop Boone Motors Building Renovations

In 2000 Appalshop purchased the historic Boone Motor building, on property across the street from the main Appalshop Center in downtown Whitesburg, KY.

Through ISTEA funding, a master plan for potential renovations was undertaken with assistance from University of Kentucky Architecture students and Mathews Architecture.

Mathews Architecture provided architectural services for replacement of the roof, restoration of the windows, replacement of deteriorated storefront, construction of a handicapped accessible entry, removal of paint from the brick, and upgrades to water and electrical services.

A structural and mechanical evaluation of the existing building was also provided and required repairs made. Schematic plans were also been developed for the addition of accessible restroom facilities, offices, and catering kitchen with that to begin as additional funding becomes available.

Appalshop has been utilizing this building for community outreach, media-related production and performances, and additional administrative office space.

A later renovation was undertaken to improve restrooms.
