Mathews Architecture prepared a Code and Condition Study of the historic circa 1923 brick structure, which has housed the programs of the Valleytown Cultural Arts Center since 1987. Originally constructed as a Baptist church with a large central dome, this building has been providing performing arts space for Valleytown as well as set design, dressing room, storage, and classroom space spread throughout all of the more than 17,000 square feet of space in this three story structure.

Concerns for compliance with current codes and the need to upgrade the existing spaces to meet growing needs prompted the board of Valleytown to seek professional assistance in evaluating the building for how it could be brought into compliance as well as what maintenance work needed to be undertaken over the next few years. As part of this work we also provided schematic floor plans outlining where changes could be made within the building plan to facilitate contemplated new programs as well as meet building code standards for exiting, toilet facilities, fire separation and handicapped accessibility.

This architectural assessment and design work was funded through a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Southern Regional Office in Charleston, S.C. The building is currently under study for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and funding for improvements, based on the reports outlined scope of work and opinion of probable costs, is currently being sought by the Valleytown Cultural Arts Center.
